Education Awards from the Credit Union Foundation of B.C.

  • The prime criteria is demonstrating financial need.
  • It is expected that the main funding is in place and every effort through normal channels available to students to access funds has been made. This includes applying for government student loans and school bursaries.
  • Acceptable grades are required.
  • Applicants must be B.C. residents (as described by the student loans criteria) who are Canadian Citizens or have Landed Immigrant status.
  • Applicants must be in attendance at a public post secondary school within the province of B.C. when the application is submitted.
  • Applicants attending accredited private schools will only be considered if the program is not offered at a public school. Applicants must provide a statement as to why they are not attending a public school and provide a receipt for tuition.
  • Applicants attending at a school out of province will only be considered if the program is not offered within B.C. A statement regarding this must accompany the submission as well as a receipt for tuition.
  • For students whose home town is near the Alberta border and it makes economical sense to attend school in that province, requests will be considered.
  • Students taking part in overseas field trips or exchange programs are not eligible unless it is a requirement to obtain the degree.
  • Programs of study may be academic, vocational, technical, or technological.
  • Graduate and post graduate students are not eligible. However students on designated programs of study required to become a professional such as a lawyer, doctor, teacher, etc. may apply.
  • Consideration is also given to mature students.
Award Amounts:
  • Awards vary up to a maximum of $3000. The amounts are determined primarily by the costs and level (year) of the program as well as the need. For example:
  • 1st year student attending 2 consecutive semesters full time in most degree programs can expect up to $1000.
  • 5th year PDP student attending 3 consecutive semesters full time at university can expect up to $2400.

The deadline is the date the application must be received at the Foundation’s address.  There is no office at the Creekside address therefore your submission must be mailed in.Applications sent prematurely before the acceptance period will not be processed as they are too often incomplete or missing information or supporting documents.

Award Process:

  • The Awards Committee will review all applications received by the deadline, taking into consideration the actual need, the length of the program, the year of study, efforts to minimize costs, personal statement of special circumstances, grades, etc. All decisions are final and are conveyed in writing.
  • If a Foundation award is approved, it is disbursed during the course of the program. Cheques are forwarded to the recipient’s credit union or credit union nearest to the institute of learning or place of residence. This enables the monitoring of the application and disbursement of the award, and it provides the credit union concerned with an opportunity to receive recognition concerning the award.
  • We ask that you attend in person for a photographic presentation which may be used in the Foundation’s newsletter or the website’s Blog as this is a means of showing the donors their contributions are at work.  If you cannot attend, please email us.
  • As required by Revenue Canada, a T4A will be issued the following spring for income tax purposes.  It is the responsibility of the recipient to advise CUFBC of any address changes.
