"I live in the East Kootenay.

By day I want to fish, kayak and bike. By night I will apply for my mortgage with East Kootenay Community Credit Union, online.

Tomorrow I will start house hunting."

As the pace of our members' lives change, so does their need for convenient financial services. New technology and a more competitive marketplace have created a new era in financial services, and East Kootenay Community Credit Union is proud to be in the forefront with its array of innovative products and services.

IMPORTANT NOTICE for members traveling internationally or members shopping cross-border

You are probably aware of the new CHIP technology that is evolving within the payment industry. The majority of Canadian credit unions will be moving to a new service provider for the switching and clearing of all electronic payment transactions, including ATM and Point of Sale, to facilitate the migration of CHIP cards.

Due to this change, Point of Sale, debit transactions using your MemberCard when out of country will be disrupted beginning September 2009, continuing into 2010

Your MemberCard may still be used to withdraw cash from ATM’s, but Point of Sale debit transactions will not be accommodated. Point of Sale debit transactions are purchases made directly with your MemberCard at retailers — for example, using your MemberCard to purchase a pair of shoes at a department store or paying for a meal at a restaurant.

GLOBAL PAYMENT MasterCards will continue to work as they do today in merchant terminals in Canada and Worldwide. Your MasterCard may still be used to withdraw cash from Canadian ATM’s however GLOBAL PAYMENT MasterCards will no longer function in international ATMs.

We regret this inconvenience and strongly urge members who may be affected to contact their branch for more information. Branch staff will help ensure that you are well prepared with appropriate payment options during your travels.

CHIP Cards

What is a CHIP card?
A CHIP card, sometimes referred to as a ’smart card’ is a credit or debit card containing an embedded computer CHIP that give the card the ability to store or process data. CHIP cards and CHIP terminals work together to ensure a highly secure transaction by validating the card and cardholder. The computer CHIP makes the card more difficult to copy, thereby reducing counterfeit fraud.

When will I get my credit union CHIP card?
EKCCU looks forward to issuing CHIP cards in 2010. MasterCard CHIP cards are now being issued. If you are planning a trip overseas we suggest you order a new MasterCard CHIP card. For more information on CHIP cards please read this PDF (180 kb)

Go Mobile

Remember when a cell phone was just for calling people? Not anymore. Today you can do all kinds of things with your phone — take pictures, download music, even check your account balances.

That’s right. Introducing mobile banking — a new feature at EKCCU that gives you real-time access to your accounts wherever you happen to be. Just send a quick text message to your account and you’ll receive a message back. It’s fast, it’s easy and it’s free.

Banking on the go
Picture it. You take your car in for servicing only to find the bill is more than you anticipated. Now what? Or maybe you’re out running errands when you see that big-ticket item you’ve been drooling over is finally on sale. Should you go for it?

With mobile banking, you can check your balance and recent account activity information from anywhere you can get a signal — instantly. There’s no need to find a computer. Just pull out your text-enabled phone.

Worried about bad guys? With mobile banking, your personal information is always secure. The only information that is transmitted is your account balance or recent account activity. No PIN numbers or passwords are required. And even if you lose your phone, no one will be able to make changes to your account, steal funds or gain access to your personal information.

Ready to go?
Getting started with mobile banking is easy. To begin the sign up process, login to online banking and click on ‘My Profile’ then the ‘Mobile Banking’ link. Once you’re registered, text any of the commands to ‘Money’ (set up during registration) and receive your account information on your cell phone.

If you don’t have access to online banking yet, contact your branch to sign up today.

*Standard text messaging rates may apply depending on your provider and plan.

No surcharges, the power of membership.
Need surcharge-free access to cash?

Don’t worry about being far from your branch. With your BC credit union Member Card® debit card, you have access to over 560 ATMs on THE EXCHANGE® ATM Network in BC, and over 2,000 ATMs across Canada — all surcharge-free!

What’s the EXCHANGE® Network?

All BC credit union ATMs are joined to THE EXCHANGE® Network, the second-largest full-service ATM network in the province. This gives all BC credit union members the benefit of surcharge-free withdrawals, via their Member Card® debit cards, at any of the 491 ATMs operated by BC credit unions, plus another 72 maintained by HSBC Bank Canada, Citizens Bank of Canada and National Bank of Canada – a total of 563 ATMs province-wide, and growing.

What’s a surcharge anyway?

A surcharge is a fee that the owner of an ATM imposes on an ATM user. ATMs that surcharge have a warning screen that appears before the completion of a transaction to notify the user of a surcharge. Surcharges range anywhere from $1.25 per transaction and up. Surcharges are not the same as transaction or account fees.

If there are fees for transactions performed at ATMs on THE EXCHANGE® Network, as outlined in your credit union account agreement, these fees will still apply and will be shown on your statement.

How do I find a surcharge-free ATM?

Finding a surcharge-free ATM is now easier than ever. Use our ATM locator below, and select your province & city from the drop down menus. If you type in your address or postal code too, we’ll show you the closest surcharge-free ATMs on a map. How’s that for access?
