Three Ways to Help
EKCCU Cranbrook – The East Kootenay Community Credit Union (EKCCU) Financial Planning and Kootenay Insurance Services (KIS) has been involved in the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life since1999. Since that time, EKCCU employees have contributed countless volunteer hours and have raised over $80,000. In honour of the 10th Anniversary of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Cranbrook, the EKCCU is working hard to realize their goal to make this the best Relay ever and they need your help. There are three ways the community can get involved– by purchasing raffle tickets, buying a luminary bag, or by contributing to the EKCCU CEO Jody Burk’s head shave. EKCCU is offering once again the popular Relay for
Life ‘Entertainment
Package Raffle.’ This year, the first prize package is a
47 inch flat screen LCD High Definition TV, a Nintendo Wii Gaming System, ‘Guitar
Hero,’ and a $100 gift card to EB Games. Second prize, donated
by Kootenay Insurance Services (KIS) is a Nintendo Wii Gaming System
and $50 gift card to EKCCU is also pleased to be the ‘Luminary Sponsor’ for the seventh year for the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life. Luminary bags can be purchased in honour of a cancer survivor or in memory of loved ones who have passed away from the disease. Stekman says, “Just after dark, luminary bags with candles lit, are placed around the track. As we walk around the track with the glow from these luminaries surrounding us, we celebrate survivors and remember those who have lost their lives to cancer. The Luminary Lap is a very moving and emotional part of the Relay.” As the Luminary Sponsor, EKCCU encourages participants and community members to be part of this special experience by purchasing a luminary bag. Each luminary bag costs $5 and can be purchased in advance at EKCCU, online at www.cancer.ca/relay or at the Relay for Life on the day of the event.
The CEO of EKCCU, Jody Burk, is also committed to helping the cause and this year, if enough money is raised, he will be having his head shaved at the Relay for Life. Burk says, “Everyone has been touched by cancer in one way or another. Every year our credit union puts in a Relay for Life team and raises a substantial amount of funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. This year, in support of friends who have passed away from cancer, in honour of friends continuing the fight, and in memory of my dad who passed away from cancer 10 years ago, I am proud to shave my head as part of my donation to this year’s Relay for Life. I’ve been growing my hair for the past three months, and if I raise more than $2,000, I will have my head shaved right to the skin.” Donations for Jody Burk’s head shave are tax deductible and can be made at www.cancer.ca/relay. Burk adds with a smile, “Those that would like to ‘take a strip off me’ can donate $250 and take the razor across my hair.” For more information on the entertainment package raffle, luminary bags, or CEO Jody Burk’s head shave, please contact Cindy Stekman at 250-426-6666.• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

RELAY with HUGE Support EKCCU employees have volunteered numerous hours and raised $78,400 since 2003 when two teams first entered the Relay. The Relay For Life is supported by all three branches of EKCCU. Funds are raised in various ways, from pledges and bake sales to backyard entertainment package raffles. EKCCU has also been the Luminary Sponsor in Cranbrook for the last six years. As a Luminary Sponsor, EKCCU encourages participants to purchase a luminary in memory of loved ones lost to cancer or in honour of loved ones who are fighting it now. The Luminary Lap, at the end of the Relay, is a very moving experience. Participants walk the track in the dark, as luminary candles bearing the names of loved ones whose lives have been touched by cancer, light up the field. The Relay For Life is a big part of EKCCU’s staff culture thanks to Cindy Stekman. Her passion for what she does and great organizational skills inspire everyone who comes in contact with her. This year Cindy shaved her head to mark her 10-year anniversary of her own battle with cancer. She raised $4,520 alone and in addition, Cindy inspired an additional $4,679 from her daughter Lindsey and her good friends Donna and Wayne Butler who raised $655 and $4,024 respectively. Everyone at EKCCU would like to give a huge thanks to our amazing members and community who support us in the hopes of finding a cure for this terrible disease. "Cindy Stekman is a fighter, a leader, and an overall outstanding person", commented EKCCU’s CEO Jody Burk, "Over the last 10 years, Cindy has been an inspiration to fellow employees who have helped raise funds and awareness for the Canadian Cancer Society, through the Relay For Life, and an example for those employees and their families who have also fought this terrible disease." If you are passing by EKCCU please drop in and congratulate Cindy on her outstanding job.![]() |
