| In December 1950,
10 people with a little money and a lot of vision pooled their resources
and joined together to apply for a credit union charter. Like many people
today, they believed that the credit union philosophy of keeping local money
in the local community made good financial sense. It was with this spirit
of community involvement that East Kootenay Community Credit Union opened
for business. This spirit continues to guide the credit union today as we
strive to be "Partners In Our Communities".
With our CEO Jody Burk leading the way, East Kootenay Community Credit Union employs over 70 people in the area. Always looking towards the future we are continuing with the long-term direction we established in 2001 and have continued with a balanced focus and direction. At EKCCU our customers are members, they are shareholders and each has an equal vote in the rules and in the election of directors from within their own ranks. Because of our close member ties, we are very much aware of the needs of the community. Member deposits are likely to be kept working in the community, to the benefit of all. Loan and mortgage policies are also likely to be the most liberal in the community, because we know, and can relate to, the problems our members are facing. We share our profits with our Members. We have given back to members over $3MILLION since 1988 and since 1994, thanks to our members; we have given over $280,000 back to our communities in donations and sponsorship. In 2003 a major focal point was the exterior repair and upgrade to our administration centre and branch right here in Cranbrook, BC. The new brick exterior has been looked upon as an example of downtown revitalization and the credit union as a leader in this important movement. The new Fernie branch has also been a major initiative. We have developed a positive image in the community from our business development activities and from the look of the new facility. We are very proud to have opened in Spring 2004. In 1994, when the Royal Bank left Elkford, the town was left with no financial institution. East Kootenay Community Credit Union opened its doors and we have been proudly serving the community ever since. Always looking for ways to serve you better, a full product review was undertaken in 2003 resulting in mortgage product improvements, a 7 year car loan, a car loan program through the local car dealers and a flexible line of credit. We are also using a current survey to develop an action plan for further product and service enhancements to ensure EKCCU is the Financial Institution of choice for our members. As a Partner in our Communities we remain a strong supporter in our communities. In addition to our donations, our sponsorship of the Credit Union Puck Toss at the Kootenay Ice hockey games raised over $4000 for various charities. Many of our staff and directors invest time and participate in executive/director capacities in community organizations. We are also very proud of the scholarships and bursaries we are able to offer to local students and have made great advancements in helping to develop the Centre of Excellence in Depression Research. East Kootenay Community Credit Union donated $10,000 to the Depression Centre Building on the $1-million-plus donation by B.C. Credit Unions. |
